Game of Thrones Walking tour, Dubrovnik, Croatia

We took a two hour walking tour focusing on the filming locations of the show Game of Thrones (GoT). There unfortunately was not a 'movies and tv-shows tour' available. Since also Star Wars, Vikings and a Robin Hood movie has filmed in the city an expansion beyond GoT might be a good idea?

Z has watched the show (more than once) and read the books, while H never got hooked on the show and therefore have had no interest in the book. We were never the less both were interest in this tour.

Our guide was named Alexandra, Alex for short, and she proved to have quit a bit of insight as she was local and was in the city while the filming was going on. She knew quit a few people who had worked on the sets as well. The tour was provided by Dubrovnik Walks and they had radios and headsets for all the participants which was wonderful. After our Evening Tour without the freedom to look and walk around this was a blessing. The guide had a booklet of pictures (A4 sized) which she held up for us to see. The booklet was well-loved and you could se where it had been held time and time again.

Dubrovnik is the second location for Kings Landing (the first was Malta, and why they could not return you can google). The Kings Landing on screen is a mix of arkitetual features from the two old fortresses of Dubrovnik. With CGI they cut, pasted and extended to make their 'movie magic'. The house of the Undying as well as the home of Xaro Xhoan Daxos were also locations in Dubrovnik. Lokrum island which can be easily seen from Old Town is where Qarth was film.

The first stop on out tour was closed for a wedding. Our guide showed us her pictures of the locations inside and honestly we did not mind not having to clime all the way to the fort and pay 15€ pr. pers.

Off we went to se where the harbour scenes were filmed. Alex show us the pictures at pointed out what had been moved where and how one bay could be three locations just by using angles.

We continued into Old Town where we stopped inside Pile Gate. This had been a extra troublesome place to film, but HBO had managed it. Closing the gate for entrance and exits had been expensive and trying - having to scrap part of the footage and come back to reshoot mush have been a pain in the...

On our way through the Old Town to the stairs which are possibly the most famous set inside the city walls, Alex pointed out her recommendations when it came to restaurants and souvenirs. *Spoiler alert: We tried one of them and she was right*
To film Cerceis walk of shame the production had to compensate every shop, restaurant, and resident around the set. They even had to buy the city wall walk out for the duration of the filming to avoid spoilers. Alex showed os the 'before CGI' picture of the view from the stairs and could tell us that the rest of the crowd we saw was 'cops-paste'.

We had a great two hours and it was so cool to get a feel for how much was real and how much had been added on or erased to make the fantasy seem reel. If you have an interest in 'movie magic' or in Game of Thrones this tour is recommendable.
